Since the conclusion of his party's convention this past July, Democratic VP nominee NC Senator John Edwards has scarcely been seen or heard. Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert seems to have the right touch to provoke comment from Senator Edwards.Saturday September 18, 2004, while stumping in Illinois with VP Dick Cheney, Speaker Hastert was asked by a reporter "if he thought al Qaeda would operate with more comfort if Kerry were elected?" Speaker Hastert replied "that's my opinion, yes."

In response to that exchange, Sen.Edwards at a rally in Phoenixville Pennsylvania said, "Hastert has joined the fear-mongering choir. Let me just say this in the simplest possible terms, when John Kerry is president of the United States, we will find al Qaeda where they are and crush them before they can do damage to the American people." Senator Edwards did not elaborate as to how he and Senator Kerry would accomplish these goals.
