COLUMBUS, OH – U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman today issued the following statement regarding Democrats’ financial regulatory legislation that is another missed opportumity for real reforms to help put Ohio and the nation back on the right economic track: |
“Wall Street reform is badly needed, but just like we saw during the debate regarding the healthcare bill, Washington missed an opportunity for real, balanced reform by passing partisan legislation that does not deal with the underlying problems. The financial regulation reform legislation does nothing to end ‘too big to fail,’ ignores the deep problems at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that were a catalyst for the financial crisis, and makes it even harder for Ohio small businesses to get loans from community banks and other lenders. This will make it harder, not easier, to create jobs and get our Ohio economy back on its feet. Congress had a chance to address a root cause of our economic downturn – the mortgage meltdown, do away with the bailout mentality that has taken hold, and help small businesses. Unfortunately, political gamesmanship got in the way.”
