WASHINGTON – This year marks the second annual Republican Conference New Media Challenge, where Members of Congress compete in a March Madness style bracket competition. Each week, members compete via a different medium (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or all combined) and receive points for the number of likes, followers, or views they receive. To move on to the next rounds, Members of Congress must get more points than their opponents.
Today, Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) advanced to the Championship round of the competition, and released the following statement:
“It is an honor to be a finalist in this year’s New Media Challenge. Part of my commitment to my constituents is to stay connected with them when I'm away from the District through as many creative means as possible. From Facebook conversations, to tweeting on Twitter, to recording videos for YouTube, and a world of other social media outlets – I’m doing all I can to keep Illinois’ Eighth informed and let them know I'm listening.”
“The New Media Challenge results have only highlighted what we have been doing in this office since day one. My team has worked to come up with creative new ways to reach my constituents and help spread our message of smaller government and lower taxes. But it’s important to note that while communicating via new media is a great way to keep in touch with my constituents, it is no substitute for meeting them back in the district. That’s why I host an informal Cup of Joe with Joe every Saturday, have hosted over 30 Town Hall meetings, and continue to tour businesses around the district.”
“I could not have made it to the final round of this challenge without the support of everyone back home in Illinois and the support of other conservatives across the country. This competition began with 106 participating House Republicans, and now that we’re down to the final two Members, I ask that everyone continue to do what they’ve done thus far – join the conversation and connect with me online.”
In this final round, Rep. Walsh will be competing on all three mediums: Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
