Congressman Greg Walden Weekly Republican Address TEXT VIDEO 09/18/10

Podcast of the address: Download MP3 for PODCAST FULL TEXT TRANSCRIPT BELOW. Video of the address will be available here once the embargo is lifted. 6:00 a.m. ET, Saturday, September 18, 2010 || MP4 File || MPEG File || MOV File (Full HD - 2 GB)

Washington (Sep 17) In the Weekly Republican Address, Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) calls on Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to allow an up-or-down vote before Congress adjourns for the fall on legislation to stop all of the job-killing tax hikes that are scheduled to take effect on January 1. Rep. Walden notes that stopping all the tax hikes is the will of the people and an emerging bipartisan majority in the House, and is essential to helping our economy get back to creating jobs. House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) pressed Speaker Pelosi for an up-or-down vote to stop all the tax hikes in a letter on Wednesday and at his weekly press briefing on Thursday.
Greg WaldenRep. Walden is the chairman of the House Republican Leadership and represents Oregon’s Second Congressional District, which is comprised of 20 counties in eastern, southern, and central Oregon.

“Hello, I’m Representative Greg Walden, and I work for the people of Oregon’s Second Congressional District.

“Before being sent to Congress, like many Americans, I worked for myself. My wife and I were small business owners for nearly 22 years. So we know what it’s like to sign the front of a payroll check, and scratch out a business plan on the back of a napkin.
“You know it’s this entrepreneurial spirit, unfortunately, that is lost on the powers-that-be in Washington, who think that the change comes in the form of 2,000-page monstrosities that transfer money and freedom from the people to the government.

“Americans have had enough of permanent bailouts, government takeovers, and ‘stimulus’ spending sprees. Democrats’ job-killing policies have left our small businesses tied up in uncertainty and our economy bogged down by nearly 10 percent unemployment.

“America is speaking out, and it’s time Washington started listening.

“Republicans have warned that excessive government spending, along with uncertainty facing small businesses, are hampering job creation in America, and we’ve called for bipartisan action this month to address both of these issues.

“First, Republicans want to stop all of the tax hikes that are set to take effect on January 1st. Now, for his part, President Obama proposes raising taxes on half of small business income in America. But economists, and frankly a growing chorus of Democrats in Congress, agree with us that raising taxes on anyone in a struggling economy – especially small businesses – is the exact wrong thing to do.

“Next, Republicans want to cut non-security government spending to 2008 levels, before all of the bailouts, before the government takeovers, and the ‘stimulus’ spending sprees began.

“You know American families and small businesses have been making really tough choices over the last couple of years to cut back spending and to adjust to this new economic reality. Why should the federal government be any different? Our plan saves taxpayers nearly $100 billion and represents a first step on the path to fiscal sanity so that we can stop piling debt on our kids and grandkids.

“Now, with just days remaining in this legislative session, House Republican Leader John Boehner has informed Speaker Nancy Pelosi that Republicans are ready to work together to enact this two-point jobs plan immediately.

“Even as we seek to act quickly, we must also act openly. You know, taxpayers were rightly outraged when Democratic Leaders tried to short-circuit the rules and rig the final vote to force President Obama’s government takeover of health care through Congress.

“The American people didn’t stand for this power grab then, and they won’t stand for it now – especially with their jobs, their families, and their futures at stake.

“That’s why Leader Boehner has asked Speaker Pelosi to assure the American people that she will allow nothing short of a full up-or-down vote on bills to cut spending and stop all of the looming tax hikes.

“This way, the will of the people and their elected representatives can be heard. Anything less fails our economy and provides further evidence that Democrats are more committed to preserving their power than helping our economy.

“If President Obama and Washington Democrats are truly focused on creating jobs, we should take action immediately to cut government spending and stop all of these impending tax hikes.

“And if Speaker Pelosi will allow up-or-down votes on these priorities this month, we can show the American people we’re listening and ready to put their best interests those of our constituents – the people we work for – first.

“Thank you for your time.”

Pat Toomey: Joe Sestak and health care law puts the government between patients and doctors VIDEO

Allentown, PA – Fresh from receiving the support of the Pennsylvania Medical Society PAC earlier this week, today, U.S. Senate candidate and former small business owner Pat Toomey released a new television ad highlighting the health care issue.

The ad features a local Delaware County family doctor and her thoughts on Congressman Joe Sestak’s support for a government health care takeover. Dr. Maria DeMario is a family practitioner in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. She has been practicing medicine for 17 years and is a past president of the Delaware County Medical Society.

Last summer, Dr. DeMario and several other concerned physicians in Delaware County contacted Congressman Sestak’s office about setting up an appointment with him to discuss their concerns about the massive government-run health care bill and the burdens it would place on patients’ care.

Congressman Sestak was so determined to support the government health care takeover that he never even gave his own district’s doctors an appointment.
Dr. DeMario also talks about her support for Pat Toomey’s commonsense health care reforms that protect the doctor-patient relationship, lower the cost of health care, and maintain the quality of care we have in America.

Congressman Sestak’s position on health care is so extreme, he even voted for the most extreme version of the bill that would have allowed states to outlaw private health insurance altogether (Education & Labor Committee, 07/17/09). In fact, when Congress passed the final bill – opposed by 34 Democrats including 2 Pennsylvania Democrats – Congressman Sestak said he was disappointed in the bill because it did not go far enough (MSNBC, Andrea Mitchell
Reports, 12/17/09).

The ad will be running on broadcast television for an indefinite period of time.

“Doctor” - Text Transcript:

Voiceover: Congressman Joe Sestak voted for the most extreme version of a Washington health care takeover.

Dr. Maria C. DeMario: The new health care law puts the government between patients and their doctors. It’s a prescription for disaster. I tried to discuss safe and effective reform with my congressman, Joe Sestak, but our local group of doctors couldn’t even get an appointment. Pat Toomey respects patients’ rights. He has the best plan for health care.

Pat Toomey: I’m Pat Toomey and I approve this message.

Republican Governors Association Democrat Peter Shumlin - More Taxes VIDEO

Peter Shumlin asks to look at his record and not his rhetoric. What does his record show? Peter Shumlin has a long record of support for higher taxes on the people of Vermont. Again and again, Shumlin has voted for tax increases. As a proud author of Act 60, he's raised Vermont's property taxes, last year he fought to increase taxes by $20 million, and this year he voted to raise taxes on farmers and manufacturers.

Sharron Angle: Harry Reid illegal aliens Best Friend VIDEO

New Angle Ad: Best Friend

New Television Ad Focuses on Harry Reid's Weak Record on Illegal Immigration.

Today, the Sharron Angle for Senate campaign released a new television ad entitled, “Best Friend.” The ad highlights Harry Reid's record of opposition to Arizona's immigration law and his provision of special tax breaks and Social Security benefits to illegal aliens. These misguided policies demonstrate the failed leadership of Senator Reid, which has resulted in the nation's highest unemployment rate for Nevada.

"Harry Reid's support for amnesty and his opposition to Arizona's immigration law stands in direct contrast to what the voters of Nevada want," said Jerry Stacy, Press Secretary for Sharron Angle. "Senator Reid is out-of-touch with Nevadans in his attempts to give incentives to illegal immigrants while his state's unemployment skyrockets to the worst in the nation."

GOP Leader: “The American People Are Not Going To Accept Anything Less Than The Vote That They Deserve”
Washington (Sep 16) At his weekly press briefing, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) called on Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to pledge to the American people that she’ll allow an honest up-or-down vote before Congress adjourns this fall on legislation to stop all of the coming tax hikes. Boehner’s remarks come as a growing chorus of Democrats, including Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and at least 31 others – according to the Associated Press – agree with Republicans that raising taxes on anyone, especially small businesses, is the wrong thing to do in a struggling economy. Boehner also highlighted the GOP’s two-point plan to cut spending back to 2008 levels and stop the tax hikes, and slammed the White House for offering a “pre-election shopping list” of more job-killing spending.

RNC Chairman Michael Steele I want to congratulate Christine O’Donnell

Statement From RNC Chairman Michael Steele On The Delaware Primaries.

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement on the Delaware primary election results tonight:

“After a spirited primary, I want to congratulate Christine O’Donnell on winning the nomination, and thank Mike Castle for his commitment to our Party.

“Our Republican nominees across the state offer the voters of Delaware a chance to break with the Democrats’ failed economic agenda that is stifling our recovery and bankrupting our future. We look forward to having a vigorous debate over policies that will create jobs, protect small businesses and turn Delaware’s economy around.”

The National Republican Senatorial Committee strongly stands by Christine O’Donnell

NRSC Chairman Cornyn’s Statement On Delaware Senate Race.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), released the following statement regarding the Delaware Senate race:

“Let there be no mistake: The National Republican Senatorial Committee – and I personally as the committee’s chairman – strongly stand by all of our Republican nominees, including Christine O’Donnell in Delaware.

“I reached out to Christine this morning, and as I have conveyed to all of our nominees, I offered her my personal congratulations and let her know that she has our support. This support includes a check for $42,000 – the maximum allowable donation that we have provided to all of our nominees – which the NRSC will send to her campaign today.

“We remain committed to holding Democrat nominee New Castle County Executive Chris Coons accountable this November, as we inform voters about his record of driving his county to the brink of bankruptcy and supporting his party’s reckless spending policies in Washington.

“In the weeks ahead, we will decide where to best allocate additional financial resources among the large number of competitive races at stake this November. While it’s not in Republicans’ interest to advertise our spending strategy to our opponents, it’s worth noting that just yesterday, the NRSC’s first independent expenditure ad aired in support of Dr. Rand Paul’s campaign in Kentucky, where we firmly believe that he will win in November.

“It remains to be seen whether national Democrats will provide a similar level of support for many of their nominees, including in key battleground states like Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Arkansas, Illinois, and New Hampshire, among others. The Democrats’ indecision reflects the fact that Republicans are on offense in at least 12 Democrat-held states and we are leading in the polls in seven of those 12 states.

“Finally, on the matter of the New Hampshire Senate race, while the results remain outstanding, we continue to monitor the Republican primary race, and we stand ready to fully support whichever candidate is chosen as the nominee.”

Kelly Ayotte acceptance (victory) speech TEXT

Kelly Ayotte

Kelly Ayotte, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire, thanked her supporters during a speech tonight at Ayotte for Senate campaign headquarters in Manchester. The following are her remarks as prepared for delivery:

Thank you. Today we begin the race to beat Paul Hodes. And with your help, that's exactly what we are going to do.
I am here today because of you, my staff and volunteers who went door-to-door and made thousands of phone calls. You have opened your homes and your businesses to me. You have also opened your hearts to me and my family. We will never forget it.

We must never forget that this election is about who will replace Senator Judd Gregg: A Senator who has set an example nationwide on fiscal responsibility and fighting for taxpayers. I want to finish what Senator Gregg has begun. And I want to thank he and his wife Kathy for their support and service to our country.

I certainly wouldn't be here today without the support of my family. That especially means my parents, who put up 4 x 8 signs across the state. And of course my husband Joe. He has been amazing. He hasn’t seen this much smoke and fire since he came back from Iraq!

This was an incredibly spirited and close primary. I would like to say a word about Ovide Lamontagne. Ovide is a principled conservative and I have great respect for him and the race he ran. Ovide was a gentleman in the race and a gentleman when he called to offer his support. It means a lot that I have also heard from Bill Binnie, Jim Bender, and Dennis Lamare. I have great respect for each of them. We will be united in this race and we will defeat Paul Hodes.
You may have seen Paul Hodes’ ad where he says Washington, DC is like a big hot dog eating contest. But if you look closely, you’ll see Congressman Hodes has plenty of ketchup and mustard on his chin.

Paul Hodes has voted for bailouts, failed stimulus spending, ever-increasing deficits, a trillion dollar government takeover of healthcare, and huge tax increases. In fact, Paul Hodes voted with Nancy Pelosi ninety-three percent of the time. Ninety-three percent.

I will vote with New Hampshire 100% of the time.

Put simply, this election is about two very different visions for the future of New Hampshire and our nation.

Paul Hodes’ vision is for increasing the size of government paid for with higher taxes, higher deficits, more spending and more Americans out of work.

I have a different vision for our future. It is a vision of individual opportunity and responsibility. It is one of less spending, lower taxes, and creating an environment in which our small businesses can grow and create jobs. I will work to stop the spending spree in Washington and to stop this Administration’s looming tax increases.

America faces great challenges. None greater than our economy and crushing national debt. And this election will determine whether we will meet this challenge.

My family is like most New Hampshire families. And we worry about the same things you do.

We want to help our small businesses by cutting taxes and eliminating burdensome federal paperwork.

We want to secure America’s economic future by stopping wasteful Washington spending. That means no more earmarks, no more midnight deals and no more putting off tough decisions.

We want to keep our country and its citizens safe in a dangerous world. We must remain steadfast and vigilant in the fight against terrorists. Coming from a military family, that’s a solemn duty I will keep.

We must return to the core principles that have made our country great. That means our national leaders must stop apologizing for the United States of America.

As Attorney General, I rolled up my sleeves to tackle the difficult challenges that faced our state.

Now I want to take that same tough leadership to Washington. I won’t back down from a fight in the Senate, just like I didn’t shy away from making tough decisions as Attorney General.

To my supporters: You have earned this victory. Thank you for all you have done. But our work isn’t finished. We have seven weeks to win this election. As hard as you’ve worked already, I’m asking you to work even harder.
Tomorrow is the first day of the general election.

I ask you to roll up your sleeves – as I will – to win this election. I am going to Washington to fight for you and take America back.

American Crossroads Ad Michael Bennet Senator: we are outraged. You have wasted our money VIDEO

American Crossroads launches new spots for Missouri and Colorado Senate races

New ads attack liberal Democratic candidates for supporting budget-busting government waste

WASHINGTON – American Crossroads, the new conservative 527 campaign organization, today launched new TV spots in Missouri and Colorado, attacking liberal Democrats Robin Carnahan and Michael Bennet for supporting out-of-control federal spending.

The Missouri spot, which ties Robin Carnahan to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama, will air on TV stations in St. Louis, Kansas city, Springfield and Columbia for one week. The buy totals $330,000, and the spot can be viewed here.

The Colorado spot, which calls out Michael Bennet for his support of the stimulus bailout, will air on TV stations in Denver, Colorado Springs and Grand Junction for one week. The buy totals $550,000.

“Both Robin Carnahan and Micahel Bennet are trying not to blush as they tell Missouri and Colorado voters that they’re somehow ‘fiscally conservative,’” said American Crossroads communications director Jonathan Collegio. “These spots pull back their respective curtains to show voters what they really are: desperate liberal politicians addicted to pork, stimulus and bailouts, all at the expense of taxpayers.”

American Crossroads is a non-profit 527 political organization dedicated to renewing America’s commitment to individual liberty, limited government, free enterprise and a strong national defense through informed and effective political action. American Crossroads seeks to educate voters and empower citizens to hold lawmakers and office-seekers accountable for where they stand. Paid for by American Crossroads. CARL PALADINO acceptance (victory) speech TEXT

CARL PALADINO acceptance (victory) speechCARL PALADINO CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR OF NY POST PRIMARY ELECTION RALLY SEPTEMBER 14, 2010

IF WE LEARNED ANYTHING TONIGHT, IT’S THAT NEW YORKERS ARE MAD AS HELL, AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN. AND I’M HERE TO THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING ME AS THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK STATE!

I WANT TO COMMEND RICK LAZIO FOR RUNNING A CLEAN CAMPAIGN AND ASK HIM TO JOIN US.

I WANT EVERYONE IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WHO OPPOSED ME TO KNOW THIS: YOU ARE WELCOME TO JOIN THIS PEOPLE’S CRUSADE.

COME ABOARD. YOU ARE BOTH WELCOME AND NEEDED.

IF WE UNITE, WE’LL WIN – AND WE’LL REBUILD NEW YORK.

ANDREW CUOMO THINKS THAT DESPITE A LIFETIME AS AN ALBANY INSIDER, HE CAN NOW MOUTH THE WORDS OF REFORM AND WE WILL BELIEVE HIM.

ANDREW CUOMO THINKS HE CAN TRADE IN HIS LIFETIME LIBERAL BELIEFS, HIJACK OUR AGENDA, AND THE VOTERS WON’T NOTICE.

ANDREW CUOMO THINKS HE CAN MAKE SHADY DEALS WITH THE PRO-TAX WORKING FAMILIES PARTY AND THE VOTERS WON’T CARE.

SADLY, ALL ANDREW OFFERS US IS THE STATUS CUOMO.

IT WAS JUST FIVE MONTHS AGO WHEN I STOOD HERE AND SHARED MY DECISION TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR WITH YOU.

FIVE MONTHS AGO. IT SEEMS LIKE JUST YESTERDAY.

THAT NIGHT, MY FAMILY AND I WERE ABSOLUTELY OVERWHELMED BY THE SUPPORT OF THOUSANDS OF NEW YORKERS WHO MET HERE IN THIS HISTORIC BUILDING TO SEND A MESSAGE TO ALBANY.

YES, WE ARE MAD AS HELL. NEW YORKERS ARE FED UP.

AND TONIGHT THE RULING CLASS KNOWS THERE’S A PEOPLE’S REVOLUTION - EVERYDAY NEW YORKERS ARE JUST MAD ENOUGH TO FORCE CHANGE AT THE BALLOT BOX.

THE LIBERAL ELITE ARE CALLING ME EVERY NAME IN THE BOOK.

THEY SAY I’M TOO BLUNT. I AM, AND I DON’T APOLOGIZE FOR IT.

THEY SAY I’M AN ANGRY MAN – AND THAT’S TRUE, TOO.

WE’RE ALL ANGRY – NOT JUST BECAUSE WE WOKE UP ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BED THIS MORNING.

WE ARE ANGRY ABOUT PAYING THE HIGHEST INCOME TAXES AND PROPERTY TAXES IN THE NATION AND GETTING LESS AND LESS FOR IT.

WE ARE ANGRY ABOUT OUR INCOMPETENT, DYSFUNCTIONAL GOVERNMENT THAT PAYS NO ATTENTION TO THE DESIRES OF THE PEOPLE.

WE ARE ANGRY ABOUT THE CESSPOOL OF CORRUPTION AND CONFLICTS OF INTERESTS AND SELF-DEALING THAT IS ALBANY.

BUT HERE’S WHAT MY CRITICS DON’T QUITE UNDERSTAND: I KNOW THERE IS A WAY TO BRING OPPORTUNITY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH BACK TO NEW YORK STATE.

AND I BELIEVE WE CAN. WE’RE NEW YORKERS AND AMERICANS – WE CAN DO ANYTHING WE SET OUR MINDS TO.

THOSE WHO SAY THAT NEW YORK’S BRIGHTEST DAYS ARE BEHIND US – THAT OUR STATE IS SO BROKEN IT CAN’T BE FIXED – THAT NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO REBUILD NEW YORK - ARE DEAD WRONG.

YOU SEE, I BELIEVE OUR BRIGHTEST DAYS ARE YET TO COME.

I’VE TRAVELLED ACROSS NEW YORK STATE, FROM PLATTSBURG TO RIPLEY TO THE FAR REACHES OF LONG ISLAND AND STATEN ISLAND – AND I’VE LAID OUT A SPECIFIC AGENDA OF REFORM.

REAL REFORM IS POSSIBLE – BUT THERE MUST BE A CULTURAL CHANGE IN ALBANY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

AS GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK, I WILL BRING THE CHANGE THE TAXPAYERS ARE DEMANDING, AND WE’LL REBUILD NEW YORK TOGETHER:

- I’LL CUT TAXES BY TEN PERCENT IN THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF MY ADMINISTRATION.

- I’LL CUT SPENDING AND THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT BY TWENTY PERCENT IN MY FIRST YEAR.

- I’LL CUT MEDICAID BY TWENTY BILLION DOLLARS IN MY FIRST YEAR.

- TO CREATE JOBS, I’LL SLASH BUSINESS REGULATIONS AND CUT BUSINESS TAXES AND END BUREAUCRATIC HARASSMENT OF THE PRIVATE SECTOR.

- AND I’LL REFORM ALBANY. I’LL CLEAN UP THE CESSPOOL OF CORRUPTION SO OUR GOVERNMENT SERVES THE PEOPLE ONCE AND FOR ALL.

IF WE REBUILD NEW YORK, IF WE RESTORE GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, I BELIEVE WE’LL SEE GREAT THINGS.

- A GROWING ECONOMY.

- SCHOOLS THAT GRADUATE OUR CHILDREN AND PREPARE THEM FOR A FULFILLING LIFE.

- JOBS FOR OUR CHILDREN, NOT JUST ONE-WAY BUS TICKETS TO RALEIGH OR PHOENIX.

- JOBS FROM COMPANIES INVESTING IN OUR STATE, NOT MOVING AWAY.

- AND A GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE.

I’VE SAID IT BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN – IT TAKES STRONG LEADERSHIP TO MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES WHEN PEOPLE ARE IN CRISIS.

AND MAKE NO MISTAKE, WE ARE IN CRISIS TODAY – A CRISIS WE CAN AND WILL SOLVE.

TOMORROW MORNING BEGINS THE TOUGHEST PART OF THIS CAMPAIGN, THE LONGEST HAUL, THE HEAVIEST LIFT. AND I’M GOING TO NEED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU TO WORK EVEN HARDER AND FIGHT HARDER THAN WE’VE EVER FOUGHT BEFORE.

WE’RE GOING TO REBUILD NEW YORK TOGETHER!

YOU. AND YOU! AND YOU!

REPUBLICANS, DEMOCRATS, INDEPENDENTS AND ALL NEW YORKERS WHO ARE FED UP - ALL OF YOU HERE, ALL OF YOU WATCHING AND LISTENING ACROSS OUR GREAT STATE.

TOGETHER, WE WILL WIN IN NOVEMBER, TAKE BACK OUR GOVERNMENT, REBUILD NEW YORK, RESTART OUR ECONOMY, RESTORE OUR PRIDE AND FULFILL THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF OUR FOREBEARS.

I BELIEVE IN THE AMERICAN DREAM BECAUSE I HAVE LIVED THE AMERICAN DREAM.

I SEE A NEW YORK WHERE THERE IS NO BARRIER TO THE GOD-GIVEN POTENTIAL OF EVERY NEW YORKER.

I SEE A NEW YORK WHERE EVERYONE WHO WANTS A GOOD JOB CAN FIND ONE.

I SEE A NEW YORK WHERE THE PEOPLE CAN BELIEVE IN A GROUNDED GOVERNMENT AGAIN.

I SEE A NEW YORK WHERE PEOPLE WHO ARE DOWN ON THEIR LUCK CAN GET BACK ON THE ROAD TO RESPONSIBILITY, A JOB AND DIGNITY.

I SEE A NEW YORK THAT IS ONCE AGAIN THE EMPIRE STATE.

I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO MY WIFE, CATHY, AND MY CHILDREN, BILLY, DANIELLE AND SARAH – MY WHOLE FAMILY WHO HAVE BEEN SO SUPPORTIVE THESE PAST MONTHS.

John Boehner Presses Pelosi For Open Debate on Stopping Looming Tax Hikes

GOP Leader Also Urges Bipartisan Action This Month on Republicans’ Two-Point Plan to Boost The Economy By Cutting Spending & Stopping All The Tax Hikes

Washington (Sep 14) House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) requesting an open and fair debate when the House considers legislation to stop looming tax hikes so that the will of the American people and the House of Representatives can be heard.
Boehner’s letter also expresses the need for bipartisan action this month on Republicans’ two-point plan to boost the economy now by cutting government spending and stopping all the looming tax hikes.

Boehner’s letter echoes similar requests made yesterday by top House Republicans, including Rules Committee Ranking Member David Dreier (R-CA), who pressed his Democratic counterpart to hold an open and free-flowing debate on stopping all tax hikes, and committee leaders Dave Camp (R-MI), Jerry Lewis (R-CA), and Paul Ryan (R-WI), who urged their Democratic counterparts to begin immediate work on the two-point jobs plan Republicans put forth last week.

“America’s employers and entrepreneurs deserve certainty in what to expect from their government,” Leader Boehner said upon releasing the letter. “Republicans have laid out a two-point plan to give small businesses they certainty they need, and Congress should act on it this month. That means cutting government spending for next year to 2008 levels, before all of the bailouts, government takeovers, and ‘stimulus’ spending sprees began, a move that would save taxpayers nearly $100 billion. And that means freezing all tax rates for two years so that small businesses won’t be forced to fork over more resources to the federal government at a time when they can least afford it. By coming together to take these actions quickly and openly, we can show the American people we’re listening and ready to do what’s best for our economy.”

In calling for an open and fair debate on stopping the looming tax hikes, Leader Boehner reminds Speaker Pelosi of the outrage Democratic Leaders triggered last spring by rigging the final health care vote to circumvent the will of the American people and their elected representatives.

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi Speaker
The United States House of Representatives
H-232, The Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

Yesterday the Republican members of the House Rules Committee sent a letter to Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY) requesting an open and fair debate when the House considers legislation to extend tax relief for all Americans. I write today on behalf of our entire Conference to formally endorse this request, which is of particular importance as it becomes evident that a bipartisan majority in the House is in agreement with the American people that all of President Obama’s coming tax hikes should be stopped. And I reaffirm Republicans’ readiness to work with Democrats this month to enact legislation this month that will cut spending and freeze the tax code for the next two years to give our economy a chance to get back to creating jobs.

As you, Chairwoman Slaughter and other members of the Democratic leadership consider the debate and expected vote on President Obama’s scheduled tax hikes, I urge you to be mindful of the outrage that was triggered among the American public earlier this year when the Majority sought to structure the vote on President Obama’s health care overhaul in a manner that was obviously meant to circumvent the will of the American people and prevent the full House from working its will on certain critical amendments.

With our economy struggling to create jobs, the American people will not tolerate such maneuvers on the question of tax hikes. Using the suspension process – which requires a two-third vote in the House to pass legislation instead of a simple majority vote – as the vehicle for a vote on legislation that would stop President Obama’s tax hike on all tax-paying Americans would be an obvious attempt to circumvent the will of the House by denying Republican and many Democratic members their right to offer an alternative proposal. Such a transparently political tactic would be certain to bring further discredit upon our institution at a time when Americans’ distrust of Congress is at an historic level, and would send the clear message to the people that President Obama and the leaders of the Democratic-controlled Congress are more committed to partisan campaigns to preserve your power than to helping our economy create jobs for our constituents.

The two biggest obstacles to private-sector job creation in America are excessive spending by government and the job-killing uncertainty being faced by small businesses as they confront the looming threat of a major tax hike on January 1, 2011. It is imperative that Democrats and Republicans come together this month to pass legislation before Congress adjourns for the fall that takes aggressive action on both problems. House Republicans have set forth a plan for bipartisan action that would cut non-security discretionary spending to 2008 levels – the last year before the wave of “stimulus” spending sprees, bailouts, and takeovers – for the next year, and stop all of the coming tax hikes by freezing all tax rates at their current levels for the next two years. Yesterday, the senior Republicans on the three committees with jurisdiction over such legislation wrote to their counterparts requesting that talks begin immediately with the goal of sending a final bill to the president before Congress leaves town this fall. The opportunity lies before us. The work must begin now.

If President Obama and the Congress are truly focused on jobs, we should take action immediately – together, in a bipartisan way – to aggressively reduce spending and stop all of the coming tax hikes. Until this has been accomplished, the White House and Congress are not focusing on jobs. And without an open and free-flowing debate on the question of the coming tax hikes, the American people will continue to view this Congress rightly as a major obstacle to job creation in America.

Sincerely,

John Boehner
Republican Leader
