Burundi Presidential Inauguration

The United States warmly congratulates the people of Burundi on the inauguration of President Pierre Nkurunziza. Successful completion of the presidential electoral process marks a milestone for Burundi and stands as a model for ethnic reconciliation and democratic resolution of conflict. We call on the remaining rebel group, the PALIPEHUTU-FNL, to lay down its arms immediately and to join the democratic process to allow the Burundian people to enjoy the benefits of peace they so richly deserve.

The United States looks forward to fruitful relations with a Burundian government that protects human rights and pursues peaceful relations with its neighbors. The people of Burundi can rest assured that the United States firmly supports their efforts to build peace and democracy in Central Africa.
