monday august 2, 2004 12:35 - a carnival like atmosphere prevailed at the corner of 53d and lexington monday, site of the citigroup's landmark home building and subject of "unusually specific" threats by al-Qaida. a "holiday" crowd used the streets, closed to motor traffic as a pedestrian mall, eating and drinking, consuming goods and services in what looked to be a windfall for local merchants. locals as well as out of towners were much in evidence. security provided by a mixed group of nypd forces seemed to catch the mood of the people. morale and humor seem high despite the heat and humidity of the day mixed with their heavy equipment and dress. business and access was conducted in a vigilant manner but it was conducted and with efficient optimism.

Thinking will not overcome fear but action will.

W. Clement Stone 1902-, American Businessman, Author

Prosperity is not without many fears and distastes; adversity not without many comforts and hopes.

Francis Bacon 1561-1626, British Philosopher, Essayist, Statesman
